Sustainable Agriculture for Marginal Farmers
Promoting Sustainable Farming and Stronger Rural Livelihoods
Resources Development Institution (RDI), a charitable organization based in Jorhat, Assam, aims to support small and marginal farmers through sustainable agriculture, organic farming awareness, agricultural technology, and livelihood development initiatives.
Agriculture is a major source of livelihood for rural families, yet many small-scale farmers face challenges such as rising input costs, declining soil fertility, unpredictable weather, limited access to modern farming knowledge, and difficulties accessing markets. Sustainable agricultural practices can help farmers manage these challenges while protecting natural resources for future generations.
Through this initiative, RDI seeks to encourage environmentally responsible farming, strengthen agricultural awareness, and promote practical approaches that can improve rural livelihoods.
Our Objectives
Promote Sustainable Farming: Raise awareness about farming methods that protect soil health, conserve water, and use natural resources responsibly.
Encourage Organic Agriculture: Educate farmers about composting, organic manure, natural soil improvement, and responsible pest management.
Improve Agricultural Knowledge: Organize awareness programmes and practical demonstrations on suitable farming techniques.
Support Marginal Farmers: Help small-scale farmers explore affordable, locally appropriate approaches to improving productivity and reducing avoidable costs.
Promote Agricultural Technology: Introduce useful digital tools for weather information, crop planning, agricultural learning, and market awareness.
Encourage Diversified Livelihoods: Explore opportunities in kitchen gardening, horticulture, integrated farming, and other locally suitable income-generating activities.
Strengthen Climate Awareness: Promote practices that can help farmers conserve water, maintain soil quality, and adapt to changing weather conditions.
Planned Activities
RDI aims to organize farmer awareness meetings, agricultural training sessions, field demonstrations, and community-based learning activities according to local needs and available resources.
Potential activities include demonstrations on compost preparation, organic farming methods, soil conservation, water management, crop diversification, kitchen gardening, and responsible use of agricultural inputs.
The programme may also introduce farmers to digital agricultural information, weather updates, crop-related learning resources, and opportunities to improve their understanding of agricultural markets.
Where feasible, RDI will seek to facilitate knowledge sharing between farmers, agricultural experts, community organizations, and relevant institutions.
Who Will Benefit?
This initiative primarily aims to benefit small and marginal farmers, rural households, agricultural workers, women engaged in farming, and young people interested in agriculture-based livelihoods in Assam.
By improving access to practical knowledge and awareness, the programme seeks to help farming communities make informed decisions suited to their local environment and available resources.
Expected Impact
Through this initiative, RDI aims to promote improved farming awareness, encourage environmentally responsible agricultural practices, strengthen rural livelihoods, and support the long-term sustainability of local agricultural communities.
The expected benefits include greater awareness of soil and water conservation, improved understanding of organic farming techniques, opportunities for livelihood diversification, and stronger community participation in sustainable rural development.
Actual outcomes will depend on local conditions, farmer participation, available resources, and the implementation of planned activities.
