Social Support and Dignity for the Elderly
Promoting Compassion, Inclusion, and a Better Quality of Life for Senior Citizens
Resources Development Institution (RDI), a charitable organization based in Jorhat, Assam, aims to promote the dignity, social inclusion, emotional well-being, and quality of life of elderly people, particularly those living in rural and economically disadvantaged communities.
Older people deserve respect, companionship, security, and opportunities to remain active members of society. However, some senior citizens experience loneliness, social isolation, financial difficulties, limited mobility, and challenges accessing essential healthcare and support services.
Through this initiative, RDI seeks to encourage community participation, strengthen family and social support networks, and help vulnerable elderly people access appropriate assistance while preserving their dignity and independence.
Our Objectives
Promote Social Inclusion: Encourage the active participation of older people in community activities and social gatherings.
Provide Emotional Support: Promote companionship, meaningful interaction, and awareness of the emotional needs of elderly people.
Support Vulnerable Senior Citizens: Identify opportunities to connect disadvantaged elderly people with appropriate community and welfare services.
Improve Awareness of Essential Services: Help older adults and their families learn about relevant healthcare, social welfare, and support resources.
Encourage Healthy Ageing: Promote awareness of nutrition, personal hygiene, physical activity suitable for older adults, and regular medical consultation.
Protect Dignity and Rights: Raise awareness about respect, equality, elder abuse prevention, and the importance of treating senior citizens with compassion.
Strengthen Community Participation: Encourage volunteers, families, and local organizations to participate in initiatives supporting older people.
Planned Activities
RDI aims to organize community awareness programmes, social gatherings, elderly welfare activities, and outreach initiatives based on local needs and available resources.
Potential activities include visits to elderly people who experience social isolation, intergenerational interaction programmes, awareness sessions on senior citizens' rights, and guidance on accessing appropriate healthcare and welfare services.
The initiative may also encourage community volunteers to assist elderly people with everyday challenges, provide companionship, and help them connect with relevant support networks.
Where feasible, RDI will seek to collaborate with local organizations, healthcare professionals, social workers, and community groups to strengthen support for vulnerable senior citizens.
Who Will Benefit?
This initiative primarily aims to benefit senior citizens living alone, elderly people from economically weaker households, older adults with limited mobility, socially isolated individuals, and families caring for elderly relatives in Assam.
Special attention will be directed towards people who face barriers to social participation or accessing essential services because of financial difficulties, distance, disability, or limited family support.
Expected Impact
Through this initiative, RDI aims to encourage greater social inclusion, reduce isolation, strengthen community awareness, and promote respect for the dignity and rights of older people.
The programme seeks to create more supportive communities where elderly people feel valued, heard, and connected. It also aims to encourage families and younger generations to recognize the contributions and experiences of senior citizens.
Actual outcomes will depend on community participation, available resources, partnerships, and the implementation of planned activities.
